Computer simulations using a geographical information system were developed to investigate the relationships between the habitat composition of red grouse territories and the alignment of territory boundaries in relation to vegetation patterns. Field data were from a fifteen year study on Kerloch Moor, north-east Scotland, between 1963 and 1977.
In order to determine whether observed territories were arranged randomly with respect to a number of habitat characteristics, they were compared with many simulated sets of possible territory arrangements by translation of the territory boundaries to a number of different positions relative to the vegetation mosaic. A suite of summary statistics was calculated for the simulated configurations, against which the observed configurations were tested.
There was little evidence for territorial resource competition by red grouse. The positions of territories were not strongly influenced by their composition in terms of vegetation types or heather edge. Neither was there any obvious preference for territory boundaries to lie within particular vegetation types. However, there was clear evidence that physical features of the habitat (fences, walls, tracks, etc.) had a strong influence on the position of territory boundaries.
Temporal and spatial habitat heterogeneity led to a number of technical and analytical problems, and the implications of these are discussed.  相似文献

Alien insects are increasingly being dispersed around the world through international trade, causing a multitude of negative environmental impacts and billions of dollars in economic losses annually. Border controls form the last line of defense against invasions, whereby inspectors aim to intercept and stop consignments that are contaminated with harmful alien insects. In Europe, member states depend on one another to prevent insect introductions by operating a first point of entry rule – controlling goods only when they initially enter the continent. However, ensuring consistency between border control points is difficult because there exists no optimal inspection strategy. For the first time, we developed a method to quantify the volume of agricultural trade that should be inspected for quarantine insects at border control points in Europe, based on global agricultural trade of over 100 million distinct origin-commodity-species-destination pathways. This metric was then used to evaluate the performance of existing border controls, as measured by border interception results in Europe between 2003 and 2007. Alarmingly, we found significant gaps between the trade pathways that should be inspected and actual number of interceptions. Moreover, many of the most likely introduction pathways yielded none or very few insect interceptions, because regular interceptions are only made on only a narrow range of pathways. European countries with gaps in border controls have been invaded by higher numbers of quarantine alien insect species, indicating the importance of proper inspections to prevent insect invasions. Equipped with an optimal inspection strategy based on the underlying risks of trade, authorities globally will be able to implement more effective and consistent border controls.  相似文献

Degradation of a synthetic oligodeoxynucleoside phosphorothioate was studied in six systems used for antisense inhibition experiments. Oligodeoxynucleoside phosphorothioates were degraded very slowly at 37 degrees C in all of the systems studied. Measured half-lives of pentadecamers were 12 +/- 1 h in rabbit reticulocyte lysate, 7 +/- 1 h in HeLa cell postmitochondrial extract, 14 +/- 2 h in RPMI 1640 with 10% fetal bovine serum, 8 +/- 1 h in undiluted fetal bovine serum, 9 +/- 1 h in adult human serum, and 19 +/- 7 h in rat cerebrospinal fluid.  相似文献

Dysfunctional breathing is characterised by an abnormal breathing pattern leading to respiratory symptoms. The 25-item Self Evaluation of Breathing Questionnaire (SEBQ) has been developed to measure breathing-related symptoms and their severity but lacks thorough evaluation. To determine reproducibility, internal consistency and predictors of SEBQ score, 180 participants completed an online SEBQ with additional demographic and lifestyle questions. Two weeks later, 155 of those repeated SEBQ. Test–retest correlation of the SEBQ was high [intraclass correlation coefficient (3, 1) = 0.89; 95 % CI 0.85–0.92]. There was no difference in SEBQ score between test and retest (15.1 (11.6) [mean (SD)] versus 14.7 (12.4); P = 0.4) and the score showed a typical error (standard error of measurement) of 4.0. Internal consistency was high (Cronbach’s α = 0.93), and a single factor structure for items was shown. Smoking status, reported respiratory disease, recent respiratory illness and female gender were positively-associated predictors of SEBQ score, and together explained 25.6 % of score variance (P ≤ 0.001). The SEBQ has high test–retest reproducibility and its score may be predicted by current smoking, chronic respiratory disease, recent respiratory illness and female gender, thus may be a useful clinical screening tool for dysfunctional breathing.  相似文献

In South America, various species of Leishmania are endemic and cause New World tegumentary leishmaniasis (NWTL). The correct identification of these species is critical for adequate clinical management and surveillance activities. We developed a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and evaluated its diagnostic performance using 64 archived parasite isolates and 192 prospectively identified samples collected from individuals with suspected leishmaniasis enrolled at two reference clinics in Lima, Peru. The real-time PCR assay was able to detect a single parasite and provided unambiguous melting peaks for five Leishmania species of the Viannia subgenus that are highly prevalent in South America: L. (V.) braziliensis, L. (V.) panamensis, L. (V.) guyanensis, L. (V.) peruviana and L. (V.) lainsoni. Using kinetoplastid DNA-based PCR as a gold standard, the real-time PCR had sensitivity and specificity values of 92% and 77%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of conventional tests such as microscopy, culture and the leishmanin skin test (LST). In addition, the real-time PCR identified 147 different clinical samples at the species level, providing an overall agreement of 100% when compared to multilocus sequence typing (MLST) data performed on a subset of these samples. Furthermore, the real-time PCR was three times faster and five times less expensive when compared to PCR - MLST for species identification from clinical specimens. In summary, this new assay represents a cost-effective and reliable alternative for the identification of the main species causing NWTL in South America.  相似文献

The weights of Mute Swans contain useful information on individuals' prospects for survival and breeding but to interpret them one needs to know what 'typical' weights would be. This paper uses multiple linear regression to predict such 'typical' weights: 1968 zveighings of 957 Mute Swans, from south Staffordshire, England, are analysed with respect to sex, age, moultstage, month of capture and breeding status. Because of marked sexual dimorphism, knowing a swan's sex is fundamental to interpreting its weight; age from hatching and stage of primary feather growth affect cygnets' weights near fledging; weights of young swans change with age during their first years of life; primary feather moult significantly depresses the weights of first year males but not, in this study area, of older males or females; monthly, seasonal changes are generally small; breeding adults are significantly heavier. The results and their biological implications agree well with other, less comprehensive, analyses. The method described could facilitate both the identification of other factors that should be investigated and comparisons between different study areas.  相似文献

Vitamin A (retinol) is absorbed in the small intestine, stored in liver, and secreted into circulation bound to serum retinol-binding protein (RBP4). Circulating retinol may be taken up by extrahepatic tissues or recycled back to liver multiple times before it is finally metabolized or degraded. Liver exhibits high affinity binding sites for RBP4, but specific receptors have not been identified. The only known high affinity receptor for RBP4, Stra6, is not expressed in the liver. Here we report discovery of RBP4 receptor-2 (RBPR2), a novel retinol transporter expressed primarily in liver and intestine and induced in adipose tissue of obese mice. RBPR2 is structurally related to Stra6 and highly conserved in vertebrates, including humans. Expression of RBPR2 in cultured cells confers high affinity RBP4 binding and retinol transport, and RBPR2 knockdown reduces RBP4 binding/retinol transport. RBPR2 expression is suppressed by retinol and retinoic acid and correlates inversely with liver retinol stores in vivo. We conclude that RBPR2 is a novel retinol transporter that potentially regulates retinol homeostasis in liver and other tissues. In addition, expression of RBPR2 in liver and fat suggests a possible role in mediating established metabolic actions of RBP4 in those tissues.  相似文献

The solution conformations of the group B polysaccharide of Neisseria meningitidis were analyzed by DQF-COSY and pure absorption 2D NOE NMR with three mixing times. The pyranose ring of the sialic acid residue was found to be in the 2C5 conformation. The DQF-COSY analysis indicated that the orientations of H6 and H7 and of H7 and H8 are both gauche. In order to overcome the difficulties in analyzing the NOE data due to the two sets of proton overlaps, molecular modeling of alpha-2,8-linked sialic acid oligomers was carried out to investigate possible conformers, and theoretical NOE calculations were performed by using CORMA (complete relaxation matrix analysis). Our analysis suggests that the polysaccharide adopts helical structures for which the phi (defined by O6-C2-O8-C8) and psi (C2-O8-C8-C7) angles are in the following ranges: phi -60 to 0 degrees, psi 115-175 degrees or phi 90-120 degrees, psi 55-175 degrees. The weak affinity of anti-B antibodies for smaller alpha-2,8-linked oligosaccharides may be due to the fact that such oligomers are more flexible and may not form an ordered structure as the poly(sialic acid) does.  相似文献

Summary Antiserum to arginine-vasopressin has been used to characterise the pair of vasopressin-like immunoreactive (VPLI) neurons in the locust. These neurons have cell bodies in the suboesophageal ganglion, each with a bifurcating dorsal lateral axon which gives rise to predominantly dorsal neuropilar branching in every ganglion of the ventral nerve cord. There are extensive beaded fibre plexuses in most peripheral nerves of thoracic and abdominal ganglia, but in the brain, the peripheral plexuses are reduced while neuropilar branching is more extensive, although it generally remains superficial. An array of fibres runs centripetally through the laminamedulla chiasma in the optic lobes. Lucifer Yellow or cobalt intracellular staining of single VPLI cells in the adult suboesophageal ganglion shows that all immunoreactive processes emanate from these two neurons, but an additional midline arborisation (that was only partially revealed by immunostaining) was also observed. Intracellularly staining VPLI cells in smaller larval instars, which permits dye to reach the thoracic ganglia, confirms that there is no similar region of poorly-immunoreactive midline arborisation in these ganglia. It has been previously suggested that the immunoreactive superficial fibres and peripheral plexuses in ventral cord ganglia serve a neurohaemal function, releasing the locust vasopressin-like diuretic hormone, F2. We suggest that the other major region of VPLI arborisation, the poorly immunoreactive midline fibres in the suboesophageal ganglion, could be a region where VPLI cells receive synaptic input.
